Kris Nóva has died in a climbing accident. Creator of the Nivenly Foundation, inspiration for Hachyderm, Nóva was a software engineer, author, public speaker, alpinist, and transgender advocate, maybe best known for her work on Kubernetes.

At one time unhoused, she became a 'successful grown-up hacker' and a pillar of the open-source community.

I never met her, but her online presence was inspirational. Somehow she was both delightfully impulsive and thoughtfully principled. She combined technical savvy, care for community, and sheer gusto. The world is poorer without her.

My Fediverse (social media) feed yesterday was a torrent of shock and sadness at this news; I exclaimed aloud with horror when I read it, as Nóva's insights and observations on sociotechnical topics had been something of a fixture for some time before she handed Hachyderm over to Nivenly, and it was so terrible to have her ripped away from us.

I follow several people who use the Hachyderm Mastodon instance. Their grief.

The Hacker News thread actually has a lot of meaningful comments, such as "she had a way to say things concisely, things I had always wanted to express, but never had the words" and "Kris did not know me before we did this very personal podcast.... This is about both our times as homeless tech people. She was the reason I am who I am, and we didn't know that until we did this."

Grateful for all that Kris Nóva shared with us during her too-short life.
